Sonic Movie References to the Video Games
Written by Amos Gikunda - Wednesday, Oct 5, 2022 at 9:20am
Video game-based movies have had a terrible track record, but Sonic the Hedgehog is exceeding all expectations. When Sonic the Hedgehog was released in 2020, it became the highest-grossing video game movie ever-surprising Pokemon Detective Pikachu. The success of Sonic the hedgehog and Pokemon Detective Pikachu is changing the narrative about video game-based movies. Following the success of the first part, paramount pictures revealed the sequel "sonic the hedgehog 2," which was released starting on 30th march in most parts and on 8th March 2022 in the US.
One thing that makes game-inspired movies fun is the references. It feels good to connect a scene of a movie to a certain level in the game. The most referenced items in movies and games include the characters, weapons, backgrounds, cities, town, nature, and garments. Additionally, the designers get more creative to reference names and commonly used phrases. The movie is based on the Sonic the Hedgehog game franchise by Sega. This article will look at the key and secret references to Sonic video games.
The rings falling when Sonic falls off the building resembles Sonic getting hit in the games
Sonic Gold rings are very symbolic and important for him to remain incognito. His guardian believes Sonic should remain hidden because he holds unique powers. Sonic can use the rings in many ways; for example, he can use them to create a portal for traveling across different universes. It is important to mention that the rings do not prevent sonic from attacks or death in the movie like in the video games. However, there is a point where Sonic loses his rings and faints simultaneously. Although he doesn't get hurt for dropping the rings, the allusion to him rushing to pick up the rings is well put in play, just like in the game. When the rings fall off as he falls off the building, it symbolizes sonic getting hit in the games.
The town of Green Hills is a reference to Green Hills Zone
The town of the green hill also referred to simply as Green Hill, first appeared as the first level on the Sega genesis in 1991. It appears green and lushy and holds other environmental features like palm trees, vertical cliffs, and loops. Furthermore, Green Hill is home to various animals. In the 2020 film, the town is referenced as home to the Wachowski family. After sonic departed his home planet, he would often visit Green Hills's town.
The mushroom world is another level reference
Just as its name depicts, the mushroom world is located in Sonic games and movies filled with mushrooms. It has a harsh sun and a muggy brown sky. Although it has a habitable atmosphere, no animal life form inhabits this planet. The mushroom world is filled with mushrooms, from the edible ones to the most poisonous ones. There are some carnivorous blue mushrooms with teeth strong enough to pierce human skin. In the games, this planet appears on a level. The movie referenced the planet when sonic banished Dr.Robotnik to this planet by using the golden rings.
Traveling through rings is a lot like traveling to the bonus levels
Sonic uses the rings to teleport to other planets. Traveling through the rings refers to traveling to the bonus levels in video games. Sonic wins any time for the video game movies with the most relatable references.
