Three Nintendo 64 Games that Changed Gaming Forever
Written by Kazuma Kiryu - Tuesday, May 11, 2021 at 12:44pm
Whether you prefer Nintendo or PlayStation, one cannot deny the significance of the Nintendo 64 and the role it played in changing games forever. That said, the Nintendo 64 was blessed with a variety of games, ranging from Super Mario 64, one of the first few 3D platformer titles, to the likes of Ocarina of Time, a game that remains unparalleled in countless aspects. Therefore, without further ado, here are some of the Nintendo 64 games that ended up revolutionizing the gaming industry.
GoldenEye 007
Possibly one of the first FPS games to hit the consoles, GoldenEye 007 is widely considered the kick-starter for making the first-person shooter genre what it is today. The game not only proved that FPS games can be crafted for platforms other than the high-end computers, but in fact, GoldenEye also contributed to the beginning of the FPS multiplayer scene.
Visually speaking, the game, although looked great back in the day, has dated quite horribly. The gameplay and aiming mechanics are also super fiddly. Overall, the gameplay itself comes off as impractical. However, despite all that, the GoldenEye 007 is undoubtedly the best example for setting up a great FPS title that will last generations. Moreover, the game had set a number of standards with its release — a campaign mode that enables players to experience open-world maps, clearing objectives and whatnot, while also making split-screen gaming a thing. All in all, GoldenEye 007 is quite the memorable title for those who were lucky enough to experience it.
Super Smash Bros
Although most may consider Super Smash Bros. a fighting game, we would like to disagree. While Tekken and Mortal Kombat rely mainly on complex button combinations, Super Smash Bros. is simply a mix of Mario and the Street Fighter games. Simply put, the game is a multiplayer brawler title which certainly continued to become as big as it is today.
The game has a combination of both 2D and 3D art-style, and a total of 12 Nintendo characters from different games and titles. Each character comes with their own set of moves and skills. Furthermore, the game allows up to 4 players to engage on the same screen, with varying game modes. And speaking of game modes, Smash Bros. also allows players to pick up and use randomly spawning items and weapons, such as Bob-omb, beam swords, Pokeballs, and Donkey Kong’s hammer.
As for the main roster of characters, you will likely be seeing mascots and poster characters from each of the exclusive Nintendo titles. These include Link, Samus, Kirby, Jigglypuff, Captain Falcon, and of course, Mario & Luigi.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Ocarina of Time is hailed as one of the greatest games of all time. Releasing back in 1998, the 5th installment to the widely-acclaimed adventure series — The Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time is being played to this day. The game is super addicting and for good reason. Although Breath of the Wild accomplished some amazing feats, Ocarina of Time is hands-down the best Zelda game, period.
The narrative for the game is quite reminiscent of the older titles. The young elven Link embarks on his journey to rescue Princess Zelda. The quest leads our Link through several ordeals, including the eerie and dark dungeons, to the heart of volcano, followed by the depths of a lake, haunted deserts, magical forests and much more.
The gameplay mechanics for the game are remarkable, even to this day. The controls are quite similar to Super Mario 64, except, Ocarina of Time is not a platformer. Players are unable to jump freely in the game, however, some instances allow the player to perform jumps and other actions. Moving on, the gameplay is mainly objectives/quest driven, having players clear a bunch of puzzles and dungeons to gain valuable rewards. The visuals were exceptional, considering the game’s release date, while the same can be said for the audio quality. In short, even with its flaws, Ocarina of Time is nothing short of a masterpiece that revolutionized gaming for the better.
