What happened to Wordle?
Written by Amos Gikunda - Tuesday, Oct 4, 2022 at 8:50am
Wordle is an online sensation crossword-like game. It was created by a Reddit engineer, Josh Wardle, during the pandemic to entertain his partner, a puzzle game enthusiast. To play the game, you need to guess a five-word letter every day in six attempts. If you get the correct letter, then it appears in a yellow square while the wrong letter shows up in grey. In case you get the right letter, and at the right position, then the block turns green.
It's amazing how simple gameplay has managed to attract the attention of millions of users every day. Sometimes, the social media frenzy reminds you of the daily challenge. It's hard to ignore the game once you get started. The share feature has made the game go viral hence attracting the attention of NYT games. In this article, we will discuss what happened to Wordle and why some fans are ranting.
The New York Times Buys Wordle
The New York Times has set a target to achieve 25 Million active monthly users on its website. This has led it to diversify its content to games, mobile applications, and other useful tools. James Wordle disclosed on his social media page that NYT had acquired Wordle for a price estimated to be at the lower seven figures. Additionally, he disclosed that the reason he decided to sell the game was that he was getting overwhelmed. James Worlde said that the game would continue being free, and users will be automatically be redirected to the New York Times Games Page.
What has changed?
It is important to note that the game mechanics have not changed. The game remains the same feel as the share feature is still available, and the player retains their history. Additionally, NYT has not placed the game behind a paywall as many fans predicted. The game continued to be ad-free. You will also note that the hard, dark, and high contrast features are still available. However, the fonts have changed to match NYT's theme, but this is not a concern for the gamers. The top menu on the NYT games page features a quick link to other similar games such as Tiles, Sudoku, Crossword, Letter-Boxed, and Spelling bee. Although some are free, others, require users to sign up or subscribe to the NYT publication.
Complains
Players that use British English are having a hard time adapting to American English. For instance, a word like Favour is now "favor" while humor is the solution for humor. Besides, NYT is said to have censored words that they deem offensive, such as Lynch, slave, and Wench. Since NYT got rid of the obscure words, fans are afraid that it will tamper with the difficulty of the game. Another interesting thing is that some users managed to retrieve a database with past and future words of the day.
Final Thoughts
Despite the NYT acquiring Wordle, the games still remain to be an online sensation. Millions of players participate every day to solve the daily five-word and share it on social media. Its simplicity and ad-free experience make it attractive to many users. New York Times is making a huge collection of apps and games to increase monthly visitors to their website.
